Starts the third Friday after Labour Day in September.

For beginners and those wishing to improve their basic skating skills for figure skating, hockey or recreational skating.

Skate Canada’s CanSkate Program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.

All programs are taught by Skate Canada Certified Coaches.

We do not have classes on Saturday or Sunday.

Parent & Tot – 30 Minute Session

Beginner skaters accompanied by a skating parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must be comfortable on skates and be able to assist the child during the lesson.

  • All child skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.
  • It is highly recommended that the parent/guardian attending with the child wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to participate in these sessions.
  • Snow pants or waterproof pants and a warm jacket with gloves or mitts are recommended.

The parent/guardian must pay the annual Skate Canada Membership fee before being allowed on the ice. This fee provides accident insurance for the parent/guardian.

Please Note: For insurance coverage purposes, the parent/guardian who signs up for the class must attend each week. No substitutions!

CanSkate A – 30 minute group lesson

Beginner to CanSkate Stage 2.

This is a first introduction to skating. Skaters learn to get up by themselves, move forwards and backwards across the ice and slow down and stop.

Skating is combined with games and lots of fun!

  • 3 year olds are taught in groups of up to 5 skaters.
  • 4 – 5 year olds are taught in groups of up to 7 skaters.

All skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

Snow pants or waterproof pants and a warm jacket with gloves or mitts are recommended.

Canskate B – 60 minute session

CanSkate Stages 2 – 6 taught in groups of up to 10 skaters.

Younger skaters who have passed Stage 1 and can manage a 1 hour session on their own may register for this program.

The CanSkate program has 6 Stages. Skaters earn ribbons for Balance, Control and Agility to earn their Stage badge. After completion of Stage 6 the skater is ready for our Figure Skating program.

  • 15 minute supervised practice
  • 15 minute group warmup with a Skate Canada coach
  • 30 minute group lesson with a Skate Canada coach

All skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

IntroSkate – 60 minute session

IntroSkate: Beginner to CanSkate Stage 6 taught in groups of up to 10 skaters.

Perfect for skaters between the ages of 10 and 17 who are just starting to learn. Designed to build balance, strength and confidence on the ice in a fun environment. Skaters progress at their own rate through the CanSkate Stages. After completion of Stage 6, the skater is ready for our figure skating program.

  • 45 minute group lesson with a Skate Canada coach
  • 15 minutes free practice time

CSA Approved hockey helmets are recommended for skaters of all levels. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

Sweat pants or leggings, a warm jacket, and gloves or mitts should be worn.

For skaters who have completed CanSkate Stage 6. Offers opportunities to compete in our Club Competition as well as Skate Canada Competitions outside the club.

For skaters seeking the opportunity to make Skate Canada’s National Team.

We do not have sessions on Saturday or Sunday.

For skaters age 11 and up who have passed CanSkate 6 or participated in one of our IntroSkate classes in the past and who are interested in figure skating. This is a Star 1 and Star 2 class for older skaters, which provides an introduction to jumps, spins, skills and the very first ice dances. 

All skaters must wear figure skates.

Skaters age 11 and up who have already started but not yet completed STAR 1 or STAR 2 should continue in STAR 1 or STAR 2.

Skaters are taught basic jumps and spins as well as the first level of ice dances.

  • 30 minutes practice time (Private coaching recommended)

Off ice classes are included and are scheduled on the same days as the on ice sessions. See below for details.

Private coaching is optional at this level but recommended. Many new STAR 1 skaters begin the season without a coach and add private or semi-private lessons as they progress during the year. Coaches decide when their skater is ready to move up.

If a skater does not have a private coach, the skater must pass all STAR 1 assessments with a club coach before moving to STAR 2.

All assessments are done in-class by your coach.

Youth camps and adult programming during school holidays and summertime

Over the winter break, during the week of December 30, we offer various levels of youth camps.

Camp: December 30 – January 3 (4 days: closed January 1)
  • Camp C: Beginner Skaters & Beginner Figure Skaters Age 4 to 9
    • For skaters age 4-9 with no experience, in CanSkate, or in Star 1/2
    • Designed to develop agility, coordination, balance
    • 60 minute on-ice group class will be taught by Skate Canada certified coach.
    • Skates, gloves, CSA approved helmets required for on-ice activities
    • Snow pants recommended for beginners
    • Active wear and running shoes required for off-ice activities
    • Drop off at 10 am, pick up at 1:10 pm

  • Camp D: Beginner Hockey Skaters Age 5 to U9
    • For beginner hockey skaters from house league to CDS (skaters must have basic skating skills: ability to push and glide)

    • On-ice session (run by Dawn Drummond, NCCP Speed Skate Canada Regional level coach and NCCP Skate Canada National level coach) will focus on speed, control, edges, turns, backwards skating, change of direction, stops and starts.

Membership Rates
  • Membership rates apply to each skater. Family members in the same program cannot combine sessions for a discounted rate (Skate More, Save More).
  • There is no family discount for siblings.

Program Fees

  • No refunds after the program start date except for medical reasons. Medical refunds are issued as a 3 year club credit except under exceptional circumstances approved by the Board of Directors.
Skate Canada Membership Fee
  • EACH SEASON, skaters must pay the Skate Canada Membership fee in addition to their program fees.
  • Valid from September 1 to August 31 each year. The fee for 2024-2025 is $61.50.
  • Covers participation in Skate Canada programming and provides skater accident insurance.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE once submitted to Skate Canada.
Skater Registration Fee
  • EACH SEASON, skaters must pay the Skater Registration Fee in addition to their program fees.
  • Valid for the current North Toronto Skating Season. The fee for 2024-2025 is $80.00.
  • AdultSkaters pay prorated fees. The fees for 2024-2025 are $30 (fall) and $50 (spring).
  • Fee is discounted for Learn to Skate and STARSkate if you register before October 1.
  • AdultSkaters pay a Registration Fee for both Spring and Fall Sessions. The fee is proportional to the number of weeks in each session.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE after the skater’s first class.
Fundraising Initiative
  • EACH SEASON, skaters are required to purchase and sell one Fundraising Book of Tickets for the annual Ontario Skaters Promotional Contest. Tickets may then be sold to friends and family.
  • The fee for 2024-2025 is $40.00.
  • AdultSkaters pay a fundraising fee for Fall and Spring Sessions in place of the tickets. The fees for 2024-2025 are $10 (fall) and $20 (spring).

Club Membership Fee
  • Lifetime club membership paid when a skater first joins our club. The fee is $20.00.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE after the skater’s first class.
Test Fees / Ribbons / Badges
  • Skate Canada assessments and test day fees are Pay as You Go for STARSkate levels.
  • There is a small fee charged for CanSkate ribbons and badges as they are earned.
Guest Skating
  • Members of the club may guest skate up to 5 times per semester (Fall, Winter) at $25 per session.
  • Non-members of the club may guest skate 3 times per semester (Fall, Winter) at $35 per session.
  • Non-members may skate only on sessions for which they are qualified. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Guest skating will only be allowed on sessions with sufficient capacity at the discretion of the Club Administrator.
  • You must book your guest skate IN ADVANCE with the Club Administrator and sign the guest skating book at the rink side.
